Most of the paths are in bushland, but are usually very close to civilization. We both travel very light, and we don't have panniers of any description. One of us stocks up the puncture repair kit with patches, glue (make sure it hasn't evaporated), bubble spanner, tyre levers, sand paper, electrical tape, spoke tightener, and lots of money (particularly if we are thinking of stopping at southgate). And the other person carries a couple of spare tubes. Not all of this is necessary. We also have a lock to go round all the bikes, a pump, and water bottles each. we carry the keys to the house and lock on a string around one of our necks, and make sure we carry a light jumper (at this time of year - it gets quite miserable when you are cold), and off we go........
P.S. After our little adventure at Coburg Lake, I feel inclined to take a full first aid kit as well, but this is not really practical... I take a clean hanky :-)
